A bureau of the U.S. Department of the Interior whose purview includes the historic and cultural resources in the National Parks system, such as the Statue of Liberty, Independence Hall, and Mese Verde, and the National Historic Preservation Programs; created in 1916. This is the federal oversight agency for the majority of historic preservation programs and is the home of the National Register of Historic Places, although many states often list NR sites on their state historic preservation office websites.
