William Merritt Chase established his studio in New York City in 1879 in the largest room of the Tenth Street Studio Building. This became a semipublic space where Chase taught students, was always open to friends, an on occasion for public receptions. Artists all over America quickly adopted the new mode of elaborate studios. Most cities of any size had an informal district with studios scattered among the retail and office buildings of downtowns. Few art galleries existed, and those that did favored European art and mroe established American artists; thus studios acted as sales rooms for the new generation of artists. (Zukowski, 2006)
