A geographically definable area, urban or rural, possessing a significant concentration, linkage, or continuity of sites, buildings, structures, or objects united historically or aesthetically by plan or physical development; may also comprise individual elements separated geographically but linked by association or history (Bucher, 1996). It is often used as a synonym for downtown or CBD (Central Business District). It also is associated with legally bounded areas such as Business Improvement District (BID), Special Improvement District (SID), etc. And it is used as a synonym for cluster as in “the theater district”.
