the spot MKE – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

This placemaking project sought to activate a surface parking lot adjacent to a conference center and hotel. While there were some well-intending efforts, overall the project did not activate the space.

Primary elements include this trailer and pavement painting.
From the conference center visibility of this space is limited.
Approach from neighboring block with “The Spot” on the right.
Looking towards the conference center, the landscaped median serves as a wall, that keeps people from wanting to enter. A better conversation between the street and sidewalk and the space being activated might help.
“the spot” painted on the ground. Other than the literal reference and paint, there is very little that might make people want to gather here.
Interesting patterns that have fallen short of place activation.
If this is a game, it is unclear how it is played.
This sculptural element is interesting. Though the inexpensive wrapping below draws the focus away from what is higher up.
Wrapping of the trees this way is probably not good for the trees. Aesthetically it does not offer much.
Edges tend to be where people congregate in public spaces. Nothing about this edge welcomes people.
One drawing left incomplete.

The site identification sign with a visible crack going through it.
