A type of Japanese pagoda of two (taho-to), three (sanju-no-to), five (goju-no-to), or seven (nana-ju-no-to) stories which enshrines Buddhist holy relics. In Japan these are usually square, but the taho-to differs in that it has a stupa-like round protuberance above the lower square roof which, in turn, carries a cylindrical railed section crowned by a square roof bearing a sorin (as do all other multistoried pagodas).
