An instrument for determining verticality, consisting of a narrow board with straight parallel edges, having a plumb line attached to one end and a hole at the other end large enough to allow the plumb to swing freely. The verticality of its edges is known when the plumb line coincides with the center line of the board, as marked on its face. (Sturgis, 1900)
