4. The Henry McGee Octagon House, 18 E. Erie St. This two-story brick structure was erected in 1857 by Henry McGee (1828-1878), a carpenter who came to Albion from Concord in 1842. McGee operated a planning mill, sash, blind and door factory on S. Superior St., west side, immediately south of the MCRR tracks. He sold his business to George W. Maher, and it became known as the Maher Planing Mill, in the 1860s.

McGee married Mary Ann Douglass of Albion in 1848. According to one source, McGee apparently built this octagon house for Mary Ann’s two aunts, Ruth and Polly Douglass. The same source states that McGee probably lived in the other octagon house near the corner of E. Erie and Allen Place [No. 6], but no other information is known about that home. The McGee Octagon House is illustrated in the 1858 Map of Calhoun County, which actually was published in the fall of 1857.

The home was sold ca. 1860 to Seth A. Mattison, an insurance agent, and then to Dr. Milton Osborn (1821-1884). Osborn had settled in Albion in 1855, and moved into the Octagon house in the late 1860’s. The house was altered by Dr. Osborn’s son during the 1920’s and made into apartments. Four of the sides of the house were extended to make the building more square. The cupola was removed and replaced with skylight.

The house still stands today, at 416 E. Erie St. (Source: Passic, 1988)
