The division of the exterior surface of a house into panes or panels, as constructively, in a half-timbered house by the disposition of its visible timbers, whether arranged so as to form rectangular panes, or, by branching and shaping, to enclose other and more or less decorative shapes as quatrefoils, circles, etc… (Sturgis, 1900)
