The architectural movement that began in the early twentieth century and broke conclusively with the classical and Gothic traditions that had shaped Western architecture for centuries. Modernism, in its original form, lasted fewer than fifty years. It was briefly derailed by portmodernism but a later revival returned modernism to favor. (Rybczynski, 2013)
