The period (1520-60) between the Raniassance and the Baroque, when architects such as Michelangelo and Giulio Romano pushed the boundaries of classicism, often in an unharmonious, exaggerated direction. Ever since, mannerism refers to any architecture that knowingly breaks rules; Robert Venturi has called himself a “modern mannerist.” (Rybczynski, 2013)
