An on-site examination of construction to determine whether it is being performed according to the drawings, specifications, and building codes; may include examination of concrete reinforcement, repointing, steel connections, and waterproofing installations; the inspector may be a building official; typically, the inspector reports deficiencies to the architect, owner, and contractor. See also construction observation, testing. 2. The examination of an existing building or structure to determine existing deficiencies; may also involve testing and nondestructive investigation.
