A style of English architecture that followed the Norman and Romanesque aesthetic and preceded the Decorated Gothic style. Early English architecture is characterized by the pointed arch or lancet that was used for windows and doors. Lancet windows are narrow and lack tracery. In addition to looking elegant, lancet arches efficiently distribute the weight of the stonework resting upon it. The early English style also features hgih walls and vaulted stone roofs, often given additional support from flying buttresses. (Ambrose, 2008)
