Doric Revival

Until c.1570 the Greek Doric Order was virtually unknown, and, even when the Greek temples at Paestum began to be taken seriously by Winckelmann et al. in the 18th c. aroused controversy, as they were perceived to be deformed and ugly by eyes accustomed to Palladian refinements. Only when primitive, Antique themes began to be explored was Greek Doric appreciated, and became a powerful element in Neo-Classicism and the Greek Revival. (Curl & Wilson, 2016)
