A hardwood tree with light reddish brown, relatively weak, coarse-grained heartwood with light-colored sapwood; used for framing lumber and, because it is durable in contact with soil, palisades and fence posts and rails; popular from 19th century to WWII for natural finished paneling and trim; now rare due to chestnut blight imported from Asia ca. 1904; Castanea dentata.
