The region was established in 1731 as Canaan Parish, a separate ecclesiastical society of the Congregational Churches of Norwalk and Stanford. Incorporated as a town in 1801, New Canaan encompassed the area of Canaan Parish with additional land annexed on the northern and western boundaries. During the early nineteenth century, New Canaan was one of the important shoe-making centers of NEw England. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, considerable numbers of summer residents were attracted here. Many of the descendants made the town their home, helping to create the residential community that remains in New Canaan.

A holiday promotion encourages people to “Shop local and support your town!” Another tag recognizes the donor of the lights and garlands on display.

A fashion cluster is in New Canaan with Ralph Lauren, Britches, Ann Taylor and Shoes and More.

Comina is a home furnishing store with extensive window display space.

Finally, the streetscape has brick pavers, historic street lamps, and plenty of places for people to sit.
