What is architecture?
In Greek, Archi means “first” and texture means “craftsmanship.” Architecture means first rate craftsmanship.
An Architecture Timeline
- Georgian, 1714-1811. English style names for four Kings named George. Based on styles of ancient Greece and Rome.
- Federalist, 1780-1830. Reactionary form against the Georgian style when Georgian became downright un-American.
- Neoclassical, 1820-1850. Fusion of Greek and Roman styles. Common in early US government buildings, since Greek and Roman ideals were so influential on the US Constitution.
- Gothic Revival, 1840-1880. Gothic style originated in France in the 12th century cathedrals. Known as the French Style, the word Gothic was hurled as an insult by Renaissance designers and the insult stuck. Devices in 1800s.
- Victorian Era, 1837-1901. Not a style, but an era, with varied styles developed during the reign of Queen Victoria.
- Art Deco, 1920-1940. An era, heavily influenced by ancient Egypt and the automobile. Numerous and quite varies styles.
- Programmatic, 1925-Present. Buildings depicting a product or service, developed in early days of car to demand attention.
