A pocket instrument consisting of a foot rule hinged in the middle and having a small spirit level set in the edge of one arm, and generally containing a pivoted and graduated blade by which any angle formed by the two arms of the rule may be subtended and measured; or by which may be determined the slope made by one arm with the horizontal as shown by the level. (Sturgis, 1900)
