Large stones, or rectangular pieces of wood or brick, used to decorate and accentuate the corners of a building; laid in vertical series with, usually, alternately large and small blocks. Besides their decorative purpose, some quoins actually serve the more functional purpose of reinforcing the corners of a building. (Phillips, 1994)
