Any of various rich, deep reddish brown paint pigments similar in color to that used by the Flemish portrait painter Van Dyck (1599-1641); may be made from decayed vegetable matter from lakes and bogs, or naturally occurring bituminous ocher, lignite, brown coal, or charred cork, or a mixture of lampblack and Indian red; used for glazing and staining. (Bucher, 1996)
