A wood house in the style of a Swiss mountain house. First promoted in the U.S. by A.J. Downing in 1850, and in several pattern books through the end of the 19th century. Typical elements include two stories, generally with a front-gable, low-pitched roof, front balcony or porch with scroll work railings and decoration, wide exposed beams and columns, wide eaves, and ornately carved and scrolled woodwork or board and batten siding.
