A standalone house with its own lawn and a luxurious heated garage for the car. Styles such as the Split Level were designed for the express purpose of having the garage an integral part of the house design. The earlier narrow city cottage evolved into a wide-bodied colonial cottage with a large lot. The house remained rectangular in plan and shape. Another variation was the two-family suburban cottage.
