Any of various lamps developed in the 1840s to efficiently burn lard oil; the burner is surrounded by a glass reservoir so that the lard is melted by the heat produced; named by the manufacturers who claimed that the amount of light given off was equal to that of the sun; common ca. 1840-60, then displaced by the burning fluid lamp and the later kerosene lamp. (Bucher, 1996)
