Saint Thomas Aquinas

Born of noble parents at Aquino, Italy, in 1226. At the age of 19 he received the Dominican habit at Naples. His brothers seized him on his way to Paris and held him in captivity for two years. From that he emerged purer, where an angle wrapped him in a cord, a token of the gift of perpetual chastity which God has given him. Having escaped he went to Cologne to study under Blessed Albert the Great, and after that to Paris where for may years he taught theology and philosophy. The church has recognized his writings as a treasure house of sacred doctrine, naming him the Angelic Doctor. His devotion to the Blessed Sacrament comes forth in the Office and hymns for Corpus Christi, which he composed. He died at Fossa-Nuova in 1274, on his way to the General Council of Lyons where the Pope summoned him. (Lives of the Saints) Photo from St. Louis, Missouri, 2026.
