Painted Ladies

An affectionate term for the multicolored, gabled Victorian houses built in the Queen Anne style, such as those found in the historic parts of Baltimore, San Francisco, and New Orleans in the USA. Although the buildings date from the late nineteenth century, Painted Ladies became a popular expression in the 1970s. Different colored paint was used to highlight distinct parts of the design and woodwork details. (Ambrose, 2008)
