A light yellow to brown earth (especially the mineral goethite) containing a compound of hydrated iron oxide (Fe2OOH) and other materials such as clay or quartz; used as a paint pigment; varities include French ocher, yellow ocher. Also known as English ochre. See also plumbic ocher, red ocher, Vandyke brown. (Bucher, 1996)
