Ceramic tile set in quick-setting portland cement mortar to form fire-resistant, lightweight, vaulted ceilings similar to those of Catalonia; popularized by architect/builder Rafael Guastavinos y Moreno (1842-1908) in projects such as C.W. Vanderbilt’s Biltmore estate in Asheville, North Carolina, and the main building at Ellis Island, New York. (Bucher, 1996)
