In ancient times the fox was said to lie down and cover himself with sand, allowing his red tongue to remain uncovered. Birds,. attracted by this seemingly toothsome morsel, were quickly siezed and devoured. Hence the fox is a symbol of Satan, for he disguises his treachery back of most alluring temptations.
