The destruction of a structure caused by failure to perform maintenance over a long time period; some localities (e.g., New Orleans) have ordinances prohibiting demolition by neglect. See also deferred maintenance, demolition. This tactic is commonly used by property owners that knowingly allow a building to fall into a state of extreme deterioration and is likely beyond repair. Some owners use this as a way around local historic preservation regulations. (Kremer, 2025)
