banking house
Same as bank building. The term, as signifying also the business establishment or firm, may be considered as more properly limited to the building appropriated to the uses of a bank alone. Such buildings are still frequently erected in the smaller towns where space in the business quarter is not so precious as in the greater cities, and where the temptation is not so strong to utilize many upper stories for rent. Before the introduction of elevators such buildings were more numerous than at present. (Sturgis, 1900)
