Abstract Expressionism
A movement in experimental, nonrepresentational painting originating in the U.S. in the 1940s, embracing many individual styles marked in common by freedom of technique, a preference for dramatically large canvases, and a desire to give spontaneous expression to the unconscious. (Ching, 1995) “Names of artistic styles are capitalized unless they are used in a context that does not refer to their specific art-historical meaning (example: His dream was surreal).” (Association of Art Editors, 2024)
