While they can be a nice feature that is both functional and aesthetic, when not maintained they detract from the character of the building they are on. Such is the case of this orange and tan striped awning to the left that supports an impressive bloom of moss and mildew. This is beyond cleaning. The only way to make better and do better is complete removal of this awning. Photo from Abingdon, Virginia, 2013.

Rigid awnings with metal roofing require less maintenace though have a completely different architectural character from fabric awnings. In this instance a hipped roof is used to cover what appear to previously been a flat canopy. Photo from Abingdon, Virginia, 2013.
