A volcanic conglomerate of ashes and gravel found in considerable quantities in the Alban Hills, near Rome, and much used in and near Rome in ancient and modern times. The name is given to other conglomerates found elsewhere in Italy; as it is suggested by the resemblance of the black spots to peppercorns. (Sturgis, 1900)
