Interwoven staves and twigs used to fill a panel in a timber frame, providing a backing for a finish of daub (clay, dung, or mud) or plaster (usually on straw or hair), which is then lime-washed. It is also used in roofs beneath thatch, in which case it is underthatch wattling. (Curl & Wilson, 2016)
