Gideon or Samson are often used as representatives of the Judges. Gideon’s symbol is the fleece, or the fleece and a bowl, or else a pitcher and a light. Samson’s symbol is a lion, or the jaw-bone of an ass, or the gates of the city of Gaza, or seven cords, or two great pillars out of alignment. (Webber, 1927)
