The investigation and classification of a foundation soil based on observation and tests of material disclosed by borings or excavations to obtain the information necessary for the design of a foundation system, including the shearing strength, compressibility, cohesion, expansiveness, permeability, and moisture content of the soil, the elevation of the water table, and the anticipated total and differential settlement. (Ching, 1995)
