As cladding, a shingle is a wedge-shaped piece of wood or a relatively flat piece of asbestos cement, molded to look like wood or an asphaltic material, used in overlapping courses to cover an outside wall surface. Wood shingles were at first split and shaved, and later sawn. Sawn shingles could have their exposed surface, the butt, shaped to create unusually patterns. In this way shingles added visual texture to building design. (Gottfried & Jennings, 1985)
