Any type of paint that has an organic or petroleum-based oil base or binder; typically linseed oil before 1940, the alkyd; mixtures by color include drab, chocolate color, pearl color, stone color, straw color, turkey red, wainscot color. Also known as oil paint. See also oil stain, tung oil. (Bucher, 1996)
