In German, for “gnarled work.” A form of ornamentation (carvings or stucco) in fashion in the 17th century. Weird, exuberant decoration, often featuring human faces with bloated noses, bulging eyes, and wild straggling beards. Examples in France, Germany, and Holland. (Pothorn, 1979)
