A beam of rolled steel, having in cross section the shape of an I with somewhat exaggerated top and bottom horizontal strokes. 2. A beam made by gluing sawn or laminated veneer lumber flanges along the top and bottom edges of a single plywood or oriented standboard web. Also called I-joist. (Saylor, 1952)
