An instrument for drawing a spiral (helix); consisting of wheel carrying a pencil, and working on a shaft which is cut into the thread of a screw. As the shaft is turned about a pivot at one end, the wheel constantly approaches (or recedes from) the pivot. (Sturgis, 1900)
