An alternate route for flow, including 1) a pipe or channel in or around a valve that allows fluid to flow even through the valve is in the closed position; 2) a road that diverts traffic around a congested area; 3) A channel that deflects floodwaters; 4) a passage in a poorly designed plumbing that allows sewer gas into a building. (Bucher, 1996)
