A projecting metal device that supports the sides and bottom of the end of a wood beam; may be a bent rectangular bar, formed sheet metal, or cast iron; types include joist hanger, stirrup, strap hanger, wall hanger. See also beam anchor, beam box. (Bucher, 1996)
