barocco

Irregular; informal; unexpected; not according to the traditions of the schools. The term seems to be the Italian form of an original Spanish or Portuguese word, the French form of which is baroque. According to the tastes and opinions of the person who used it, the term is either one of reproach, or a mere qualification descriptive of the decorative art of a certain period. (Sturgis, 1900)
