In Latin, for “friend of the court”; a party (an individual or organization) with special expertise who is not directly involved in a legal suit and who submits a brief or argument on an issue before a court; for example, the National Trust for Historic Preservation may submit an amicus curiae brief in a local court case involving preservation issues.
