trade cards
As an alternate to outdoor advertising, manufacturers and retailers used multicolor lithography for bulk quantity printing. Typically printed in color on stiff paper and measured about half the size of a modern postcard. Cards could be ordered for as little as $3.25 for a thousand. The vast majority of trade cards advertised household goods, and the most competitive companies produced the most cards. The gathering of trade cards and placement into books led to the scrapbooking trend. (Zukowski, 2006)
