stone finial

This is the original stone finial that once topped the dome of the San Giovanni in Oleo chapel in Rome.  The finial features a carved flowerhead supported by acanthus-leaf scrolls. It was removed from the chapel’s dome in 1967 to relieve the load during an emergency restoration. The original finial was replaced with a plaster copy and subsequently placed under the portico of the nearby Church of St. John a Porta Latina, where it is displayed today. (Kremer, 2025) Photo from Rome, Italy, 2025.
