The official in each U.S. state or territorial government designated by the governor to administer the State Historic Preservation Program, including assisting federal agencies and identifying and nominating eligible properties to the National Register; a key participant in the Section 106 review process, also administers the federal Historic Preservation Funds; typically works with local governments on preservation planning issues and historic preservation ordinances.
