A traffic safety measure that involves reducing the number of lanes on a road; most commonly this technique reduces a four-lane road to three lanes, with one lane in each direction and a center two-way left turn lane; remaining space from the reduction in lanes can be used for sidewalks, bicycle lakes, pedestrian refuge islands, planted medians parking, landscaping, or street trees; also called traffic calming.
