H-cowl

An H-style chimney cap (also known as an H-cowl) prevents wind from pushing smoke and gases back down into the house. It is particularly useful for homes in areas prone to turbulent or heavy winds. When wind blows through or across the open horizontal and vertical tubes, it creates a partial vacuum. This aerodynamic action actively pulls smoke and exhaust gases up out of the flue. The configuration keeps rain, heavy snow, and nesting animals or birds from falling directly down into the chimney opening. This type of ventilation cap is common on older homes, off-grid cabins, wood-burning stoves, and marine vessels where managing erratic drafts is critical.
