Daphne
A Nymph loved by Apollo; her name means ‘laurel’ in Greek. She is sometimes said to be the daughter of the River Ladon, sometimes of the Thessalian River Peneus. Apollo’s love for her was fired by Eros, angered by the taunts of Apollo who had derided him for practicing archery. Daphne fled to the mountains, and just as Apollo was about to catch her she begged her father to transform her so that she might escape. She became a laurel, the tree sacred to Apollo… (Grimal, 1990)
